  1. 1886-1980. Austrian Expressionist painter and
  2. writer, who lived in England from 1938.
  3. Initially influenced by the Vienna Sezession
  4. painters, he developed a disturbingly
  5. expressive portrait style. His writings
  6. include several plays. After World War I
  7. Kokoschka worked in Dresden, then in Prague,
  8. and fled from the Nazis to England, taking
  9. British citizenship 1947. To portraiture he
  10. added panoramic landscapes and townscapes in
  11. the 1920s and 1930s, and political allegories
  12. in the 1950s.
