1886-1980. Austrian Expressionist painter and
writer, who lived in England from 1938.
Initially influenced by the Vienna Sezession
painters, he developed a disturbingly
expressive portrait style. His writings
include several plays. After World War I
Kokoschka worked in Dresden, then in Prague,
and fled from the Nazis to England, taking
British citizenship 1947. To portraiture he
added panoramic landscapes and townscapes in
the 1920s and 1930s, and political allegories
in the 1950s.
